Peacock Caddis

Fly: Troy Allgood, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Standard dry fly
Thread: Black 6/0
Body: Peacock herl, twisted with red wire
Downwing: Elk hair
Hackle: One brown, one grizzly

Note: This is a very nice, high-riding pattern for when I encounter fish working on dark caddis in choppy water. If the water is more flat, I’ll trim the hackle flush with the bottom of the fly. With the wire reinforced herl body and a reverse hackle, the fly is almost indestructible.

I carry this pattern in the same box as the parachute adams and the aquatic wasp in size 14 to 20.
