I have been tying flies since the early 1980’s. Much of my early youth was dedicated to establishing tree nurseries throughout the western states for reforestation purposes. This brought me close to the Sierras as well as the Pacific Northwest. I continue to fish the Sierras extensively from the low elevation reservoirs to the headwaters above timberline. My selection of flies for the Fly Tier’s Page is based upon the patterns designed mostly by guides and used extensively throughout the region. Some of these patterns have been used for over 50 years, others are more recent. Invariably, they tend to be variations utilizing different materials and adapting to the conditions of the waters they fish. I created a web site about 10 years ago to showcase these patterns and to give the reader some background information as to how these patterns developed. With the plethora of materials available today, as well as hook types, new patterns seem to increase exponentially. However, with a knowledge of pattern development, the individual tier can adapt any of these patterns to the waters they fish and get an appreciation as to how the materials are used.
