Blue Upright (clipped)

Fly: Bob Wyatt, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: fine wire dry fly, all sizes
Thread: Dark grey
Tail: stiff hackle barbs from good quality cape, splayed with a couple of turns of thread at bend of hook. Webby hackle from a hen cape makes for a nice ‘cripple’ effect
Abdomen: slim dubbed dun fur, or stripped peacock herl or turkey biot, varnished lightly for strength
Thorax: slender dubbed blue dun fur
Hackle: good quality blue dun hackle, light or dark, wound two turns back and forward through thorax; clipped on underside so the fly sits flush with the surface

Note: This basic hackle pattern can be tied in a range of colours to suit the prevailing hatch,, e.g.; red spinner, etc. I like the dark Blue Upright for low light situations, and the Red Quill for a spinner fall in sunlight.
