Lil’ Dorothy

Fly: Mark Libertone, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Mustad 3906 or 3399A 12-14
Thread: Cream or white
Abdomen: Pale orange embroidery thread color # 722
Thorax: Cahill colored hare’s ear dubbing
Hackle: Cream or very pale ginger

Note: I use a lot of embroidery thread for ribbing and making abdomens on my soft hackles. It comes in tons and a shades of colors to match any natural and it’s very inexpensive. I originated this fly to represent the Ephemerella dorothea hatch on my home river. These flies, when hatching, have a very distinctive orange cast to their abdomens. Many people consider them “Little Sulphurs”, but I do not believe they are. Epeorus vitrea hatches the same time. These, to me, are the sulfurs.
