Pink Comet

Fly: Loren Williams, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Mustad 90240
Thread: Hot Pink
Eyes: Silver Bead-Chain
Tail: Hot Pink Kip Tail with a few strands of Bubblegum KF on top
Body: Pink Braid (first turn under tail to make it stand erect)
Hackle: Hot Pink Chinese Rooster

Note: when tying in the KF, advance the thread to the mid-point of the shank; double the KF strands around the thread and then secure with rearward wraps to the tail. This will ensure the KF does not pull out.

It is doubtful that the type of material used for the tail is important as long is it is active and flashy. I prefer Wing ‘n’ Flash or something similar. For the type of fishing I do for salmon (deep-ish runs and pocket water), I feel it is important to show the fish a large and aggressive fly. However, regulations limit the hook size to that of a ½” gap. Therefore, tails become important to boost the profile and add aggravating action.
