San Juan Worm

Fly: John Mundinger, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Mustad 37160, #8
Thread: Danville 6/0, Flourescent Orange
Tail: Crystal Flash, Red
Rib: Medium gauge red wire, counter-wrapped in close wraps
Legs: Steelhead & Salmon Dubbin, Red
Thorax: Peacock herl, spun in a dubbing loop

A Bow River variation of the San Juan worm I encountered was nothing more than heavy gauge red wire wrapped around a large Mustad 37160 hook. This pattern is intended to produce a similar effect, while using enough material to call it a “fly”.
