Highland Cascade (Salmon Needle Tube Fly)

Fly: John Gray, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Tube: Needle Tube (The tube used is a needle tube, 15 mm long with an outside diameter of 1.5 mm)
Thread: Uni-thread 8/0, black
Tail: Green and Yellow dyed squirrel (or fox)
Wing: Black squirrel or fox
Flash: Green Krystal Hair
Collar: Orange cock over yellow cock
Join: Short length of PVC tubing or similar
Hook: Treble hooks: Partridge Salar tube fly treble for salmon; Partridge Needle Eye Treble (X3BL) for sea trout.

Double hooks: Fulling Mill tube fly double or Ken Sawada XD1 tube fly double.

Single Hooks: Fox Carp Hook Series 2 or 3 or Drennan Starpoint.
Note:
The tube fly is displayed threaded on a needle for presentation only. Use with hook of your choice.

Background:
The needle tube flies shown have been dressed on Grays Needle Tubes, a new range of extremely slim, plastic lined, stainless steel tubes developed and manufactured in Scotland by Grays of Kilsyth.

Hooks: Specifically for the Cascade salmon needle tubes shown, I would use either Partridge Salar tube fly treble in size 13 (as on sea trout tubes and needle flies); Fulling Mill ( similar to Loop) tube fly double in size 10 or Sawada XD1 tube fly double in size 10; or Fox Series 2 Carp single.
