Duran’s WD-40

Originator: Jude Duran, Fly: John Gordon, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Tiemco 2488 (size #22)
Thread: 8/0 Gray Uni-thread
Tail: Med dun hackle fibers
Abdomen: Tying thread
Wing case: Open cell foam and one strand of pearl Krystal Flash
Thorax: Super fine gray dubbing

Note: The original WD-40 pattern uses lemon wood duck for the tailing and wing case. This is a great pattern to represent an emerging Baetis. Also tie this pattern using chocolate brown thread and mahogany super fine dubbing. Tying instructions
  1. Start thread in middle of hook and wrap back towards the bend.

  2. Tie in med dun hackle fibers for tailing.

  3. Wrap thread about 1/2 of the way up towards the eye.

  4. Tie in one strand of Pearl Krystal Flash and then a thin slice of open cell foam for the wing case.

  5. Dub an over sized thorax with super fine gray dubbing. Be sure to make it large.

  6. Pull over and tie off the open cell foam. Then pull over and tie off the KF. The KF will act to split the wing case in half.

  7. Whip Finish and apply head cement.
