Chocolate Foam Wing Emerger

Fly: John Gordon, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Tiemco 2488 (size #24-#26)
Thread: Brown 8/0 Gudebrod
Abdomen: Tying thread
Wing: White closed cell foam
Thorax: Tying thread

Note: This can also be tied using brown hackle fibers or wood duck for tailing. In size #24-#26 I don’t use any tailing. I also tie this same pattern using gray or black thread. Be sure to swing flies up through the water column at the end of the drift. Very simple but effective pattern. Tying instructions
  1. Start thread in middle of hook and wrap back towards the bend.

  2. Wrap thread back towards the eye.

  3. Tie in slice of white closed cell foam for the wing case. Trim short.

  4. Whip finish and head cement.
