Copper Shag

Fly: Jim Cramer, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: York bend
Thread: Black
Body: Lite Brite or Angel Hair. Copper has been my most productive color but others may work well in your area.
Veiling (hackle): Bronze Lite Brite tied very sparse and trimmed slightly longer than the hook

This has been a very productive nymph pattern for me for many seasons. I often tie this fly with a small bead head.

The body is constructed by progressively tying in small bunches of material to achieve a thatched roof or shingle appearance. Start at the rear and work forward covering all sides of the hook. After completing the body, tie off the thread and remove the fly from the vise. Pinch the fly between your thumb and finger and using your thumb nail as a guide trim the body a with the scissors much as if you were giving a haircut. Replace the hook in the vise and add a very thin veil of bronze colored Lite Brite over the body to finish the fly.
