The Rush!

The one word that got me hooked on fly fishing just a year ago. The rush of raising your rod high in the air, fighting a 20” San Juan rainbow trout, knowing the fly you tied the night before is at the end of the line.

I started fly fishing and fly tying only a year ago, and thanks to a couple of great friends, I have grown tremendously in this sport. I first started fishing the mountain streams of the Jemez watershed, then moving up to battle the infamous San Juan River in Northern New Mexico. Both areas offer a wide array of challenges, which has allowed me to develop techniques that can be used on any river.

Fly tying came easy to me. The first time I tried my hand at this art was at a class in a local fly shop. I tied a BH Prince Nymph and the next day, headed up to the Jemez River to see how it would work. Following that day, I knew what I wanted to do when I grew up!

These San Juan patterns are something I enjoy tying. It takes a special hand to tie these size 24 midge patterns, but when you hook up with a monster rainbow, it’s a rush you experience like never before!
