Olive Mantis Shrimp

Fly: Doug Jeffries, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Mustad 34007 up to 2/0
Thread: Olive Danville Flymaster Plus
Weight: Small lead barbells; black or yellow & black; tied at eye so hook rides up
Tail: 4 strands each peacock & gold Krystal Flash, short; small tan rabbit slightly shorter than Krystal Flash; 2 pair gold Sparkle Sili Legs longer than Krustal Flash; one Cree hackle each side, longest of all
Rib: Olive Danville Flymaster Plus thread
Shellback: Olive bucktail; tips tied in to extend over tail & legs; butt ends pulled over the top; butt ends of bucktail trimmed longer than hook eye and lacquered to form shrimp tail
Body: Olive Cactus Chenille with palmered Cree hackle over it; tie longer hackle barbules at hook bend so it tapers toward the eye

Note: This fly isn’t original; it’s a blend of Craig Mathews Salsa Shrimp and Joel Moxey’s Moxey Creek Shrimp and a few other patterns. I tied it originally for redfish on grassy flats; but it fooled my first permit in Belize, darn.
