Tied-Down Caddis

Fly: Bruce Salzburg, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: TMC 100
Thread: Black
Hackle: Black saddle (palmered over abdomen, and wound in touching turns at the collar)
Body: Orange wool dubbing
Wing: Elk or deer hair

The "trick" to tying this fly is to leave the tag end of the thread about four inches long (i.e., don't trim when you lay down the thread base). When the fly is otherwise completed, pull the wing tips down and take a couple of firm wraps with the tag end of the tying thread, and whip finish a second time at the butt of the fly.
