Snipe and Purple (Starling and Purple)

Fly: Bob Petti, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: TMC 3769
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer Silk - Purple
Body: Same as thread
Thorax: Dark Spikey Dubbing
Hackle: Starling

Note: This is one of my favorite flies for summer and early fall trout fishing on smaller freestone creeks near my home. I also carry a similar fly which has a body of peacock herl instead of the purple silk. Both are excellent flies for picking and poking around a stream that has become slow and lazy during the lower flows of summer, especially when suspended beneath a good floating dry fly. Starling skins are cheap and are an excellent source of soft hackles for wet flies.)
