Fly: Byron Haugh, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Gamakatsu S10-3F, Size #20
Thread: Tan
Tail: Grizzly Hackle Fibers
Body: Adams color fine dubbing
Hackle: Spun Deer Hair (see instructions)

Tying instructions:

Spinning the deer hair:

Form a dubbing loop at the thorax and rub the thread loop with dubbing wax and hook a dubbing twister to the bottom of the loop. Stack the deer hair. Grab the tips only, and clip the hair as close to your fingers as you can. Open the loop close to the thorax and slide the cut deer hair tips into the loop. If necessary, clip the butts again (while in the dubbing loop - careful not to move the tips). Twist the dubbing loop pretty tightly until a nice hackling of the deer hair occurs. Wrap the thorax with the loop and smooth back the hair as you hackle.
