V-Rib Chironomid

Fly: Andy Simon, photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Thread: 8/0 grey uni-thread
Head: Extra small black glass bead
Body: Black V-rib
Thorax: Peacock herl
Gills: White antron yarn
Note: This is perhaps one of my favorite flies for still waters. I take more trout with this fly than with any other, save perhaps the PT Nymph. If you’re going to try for big trout in the winter, then this is the fly to try. Even in the summer it is great in larger sizes, all the way up to a size 10. Fish this fly on either a sinking line, or an indicator, letting it sink nearly to the bottom before retreating it very slowly. Takes can be light or sometimes even undetectable. Sometimes you will be retrieving the fly in, and you will since a slight weight on the line, if so its time to strike!
